The Department of Statistics of the College ( Associated to Lucknow University, Lucknow ) is one of the high-ranking Departments in Lucknow with respect to
teaching and research. The subject “Statistics” was initially in Mathematics
Department and separated later. The Department has been chaired by Dr. S. M. Mohsin during 1971 to 2013. After that Dr. Syed Ali Manzar Rizvi is appointed as
Head of the Department. At present the Department has three Associate Professors
namely Dr. S. Ali Manzar Rizvi, Dr. S. Mohd. Haider Zaidi and Dr. S. Athar Hasan
Rizvi & Two Assistant Professors namely Dr. S. Qaim Akbar Rizvi and Mr. S. Zeashan Haider Zaidi ( Contractual basis for M.A./M.Sc. ). At present four research
scholars are enrolled with the department ( Two under the supervision of Dr. S. Mohd. Haider Zaidi and Two under the supervision of Dr. S. Athar Hasan Rizvi ). There are two Practical Labs for students of B.A./B.Sc. and one Computer Lab with
SPSS Software for the students of M.A./M.Sc. Library at the department has
sufficient books and journals for teachers, students and research scholars. The Department has conducted orientation programs, workshops, seminars, invited
lectures & add-on courses and earned an excellent reputation in teaching and
research with specialization in Statistical Inference, Design of Experiments, Survey
Sampling, Econometrics etc. The Department is well-known at National and
International level as various research papers of the Faculty are published in Indian
and Foreign Journals specially in the areas of Sampling and Econometrics. Faculty
members have been invited in various Seminars and Workshops for Invited
Talks/Lectures, Organizing and Chairing the Sessions. Several students have
achieved eminence in India and abroad in the field of Academics. Many have
secured top positions in prestigious Universities, Institutes, Government
administration and multinational companies.
HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
Statistics as a subject was first introduced in 1968 by renowned mathematician
and Principal Dr. Wazir Hasan Abidi for the students of B.A. and B.Sc. of the
college and Dr Aman Ullah was appointed to teach the subject. Due to some
reasons the subject could not continue. However it was re-introduced by then
Hony, Secretary of the college Mr. S. M. H Tahir Jarwali in 1971 and Dr. S. M. Mohsin was appointed as regular Lecturer in the Department. It was a single man
Department till 1986 when Dr. S. Ali Manzar Rizvi joined as lecture on a regular
post later on Dr S. Mohd. Haider Zaidi, Dr. S. Athar Hasan Rizvi and Dr. S. Qaim Akbar Rizvi were also appointed. Statistics is offered with Mathematics
and Physics in B.Sc. and when the Computer Science is introduced as a subject in
1989, it is also offered with computer science. In B.A. Statistics is offered with
Mathematics and any other subject of Arts Faculty. The permission to introduce M.A/M.Sc. Course in statistics under self finance
scheme is granted by Lucknow University and Government of Uttar Pradesh with
an intake of 05 students in M.A. Course and 15 students in M.Sc. Course in 2008. Two more teachers Mr. Zeashan Haider Zaidi ( Contractual basis ) and D. Nazia
Naqvi ( Guest Faculty ) are appointed to teach the M.A./M.Sc. Students.
VISION, MISSION AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT
Vision:To produce Graduates and Post Graduates in Statistics who have a sound knowledge of the major areas of statistical methodology, with a solid foundation on theoretical principles attained through rigorous practice. To improve and strengthen Statistical Services to the entire research community, contribute to the advances of science and technology through interdisciplinary research and to contribute towards improvement of the research and educational environment of the department by conducting programs that enhance statistical thinking. To promote statistical reasoning and use of sound statistical practice in the College and beyond.
Mission:The Department of Statistics of the college ( Associated to Lucknow University, Lucknow ) is committed to teaching the theory and practice of statistics to Undergraduate and Postgraduate students and to conducting original research in statistical theory and methodology. The department is distinguished by the faculty's strong interest in the application of statistics to areas such as life sciences and behavioral sciences. Recent advances in computing and information technology have had dramatic effects on the field. Increasing amounts of data of all kinds are being collected. Statistical methods are widely used in the social sciences, in the managerial and policy sciences, in engineering and the physical sciences, and in the biological and medical sciences. Students in most fields must be trained to analyze empirical data and to evaluate empirical studies. Such training typically cannot be adequate without a strong statistical education. Additionally, with the continual advance of new statistical methods, faculty outside the Department need a resource for updating their knowledge of statistics. 4 The Department has three missions: 1. Statistics Instruction - Our goal is to teach students how to think statistically, how to appropriately apply useful statistical techniques, and how to perform research to advance statistical thinking and practice. 2. Statistical Research - We seek to advance knowledge by conducting original research in statistical theory and applications. The interests of the faculty are such that "applied" problems have been the motivation for our theoretical research. 3. Statistics Practice - We seek to improve the practice of statistics through our teaching, research, service work and consulting.
Objectives:
1. To create an appropriate educational environment.
2. To conduct theoretical and practical studies in the field.
3. To provide training programs for employees in different organizations.
4. To build effective partnerships with other institutions.
5. To serve the profession and the community
